Move order

Move order is the exact sequence used to reach an opening position.

Changing the order can allow or prevent options even when the position later looks similar. Concrete tactics often make the order important.

Move order changes which options remain

Two sequences may aim for the same setup, but an early move can allow or prevent a check, pawn break, gambit, or transposition. The final arrangement alone does not reveal what alternatives were available along the way.

Both lines below reach the same piece placement after 3...Bb4, but Black reveals ...e6 and ...Nf6 in a different order. At earlier moves, White could choose different systems in response.

Remember why the order matters

Memorizing only the final position hides the opponent choices each route permitted. Attach a short reason to the earlier move, such as avoiding a gambit or keeping a transposition available.
