Transposition

A transposition occurs when different move orders reach the same chess position.

Once the same position is reached with the same game state, the available plans and legal moves are the same even though the path was different.

A transposition joins different move sequences

A transposition occurs when different move orders reach the same position with the same side to move and the same relevant rights. Opening names may change during the route, but future legal choices depend on the position reached.

Reach the same Queen's Gambit position two ways

One line begins with 1.d4 and develops the queen's knight first. The other begins with 1.Nf3 and delays Nc3. After the final move, the pieces and side to move match.

Recognize the shared position

If every move order is stored as an unrelated line, the repertoire becomes larger than the set of positions you actually need to understand. Link routes that transpose, then keep separate notes only for choices available before they merge.
