Stalemate

Stalemate is a draw in which the player to move has no legal move and the king is not in check.

The absence of a legal move is not enough for checkmate. The king must also be under attack for the position to be checkmate.

Black has no legal move in this position, but the king on h8 is not in check.

Stalemate has two conditions

The player to move must have no legal move, and that player's king must not be in check. If the king is attacked under the same no-move condition, the result is checkmate instead.

Stalemate ends the game as a draw

The player with extra material does not win merely by trapping the opposing king. A legal mating move must give check while removing every reply. Leaving the opponent with no move but no check concedes half a point to each player.

Check the opponent's legal moves before simplifying

Stalemate often appears in king-and-queen or king-and-rook endings when the stronger side removes the last movable pawn. Before a capture or constricting move, check whether the opposing king will still have a legal square.
