Knight

The knight moves two squares in one direction and one square perpendicular to it.

The knight is the only piece that can jump over occupied squares. It captures only on its destination square.

Move the knight

A knight changes file by two and rank by one, or file by one and rank by two. The route between its starting and destination squares does not matter, so intervening pieces cannot block it.

Move the knight from d4 to any of its eight destinations.

Move the knight from d4 to any of its eight destinations.

A central knight can have eight legal destinations on an empty board.

Knights jump, but capture only where they land

A knight may jump over friendly and enemy pieces. It does not capture any piece it passes over; it captures only an enemy piece on its destination square.

Nxe5
The knight lands on e5 and captures the piece there.

Central squares give a knight more options

A knight near the center can attack up to eight squares. A knight in a corner attacks only two, which is why developing a knight toward the center is a common opening principle.
